Glossary

GEO glossary - every term, defined.

The vocabulary of Generative Engine Optimization. Bookmark it, quote it, hand it to your team.

AI Overview
Google's generative summary that appears above the classic blue links. Sources are cited but click-throughs drop 30–70%.
Answer engine
Any AI that returns a synthesized answer instead of a list of links - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Apple Intelligence.
Citation
A source an LLM references when composing its answer. Citation quality and diversity are the two biggest levers in GEO.
DefinedTermSet
Schema.org type used to structure a glossary so AI models can extract individual definitions as atomic facts.
Entity
A canonical, disambiguated concept in a knowledge graph - your business, a person, a product. AI reasons over entities, not keywords.
Entity engineering
Structuring your business as an unambiguous entity across schema, knowledge graphs, and citations so LLMs treat it as fact.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
The practice of making AI models mention your business by name when they generate answers to buyer questions.
Grounding
The retrieval step where an LLM pulls fresh sources before answering. Being retrievable is the whole game.
Hallucination
When an LLM asserts something false with confidence. GEO minimizes this for your brand by feeding it clean, structured facts.
Knowledge graph
The entity network an LLM reasons over. Google's KG, Wikidata, and vendor-specific graphs all feed answers.
LLM
Large language model - the underlying architecture behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and every answer engine.
llms.txt
A `/llms.txt` file (like robots.txt) telling AI crawlers what your site offers and where to look. Emerging standard.
Prompt
The buyer's question. GEO tracking is prompt-level: 'best [service] in [city]' is one prompt, tracked monthly across models.
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
The technique where an LLM retrieves sources at query time and generates an answer grounded in them.
Schema.org
The vocabulary AI models use to understand structured data on your site - Organization, Service, Product, FAQPage, etc.
Share of Voice (SOV)
Percentage of tracked prompts where your brand is named. The North Star GEO metric.
SGE / AI Overviews
Search Generative Experience (now AI Overviews) - Google's answer-engine layer above traditional results.
Structured data
JSON-LD, Microdata, or RDFa markup on your pages that lets AI extract facts unambiguously.
Zero-click
A search where the user gets their answer without clicking. AI answer engines are almost 100% zero-click by design.
